When I realised my tinnitus
would always be with me,
I felt the eternity
mild panic
like the teeter and sway
of a train on a bend holding on
for too long.
This is how I feel about you.
I like to think you’d smile at the comparison –
you of all people, with an inner ear vexation!
I don’t want to be predicted.
I did not predict you.
You’re here in every stop, in every view,
in every moment old and new;
every sunrise laid
to start the day;
every sunset buried
and the mourners that watch;
every wave that crashes in
but cannot stay;
every bird song I know
and the ones I get wrong;
every walk that inspires
the paint spills at home;
every book that makes me smile
and the ones still unread,
the ones that make me cry – just something in my eye!
the ones that make me feel,
and question what to think;
every turn of the seasons
as I proclaim
why spring is my favourite
and autumn is yours,
my heart bursting forth,
yours falling away.
When I realised that you
would always be with me, I felt
the eternity of it,
and I sighed
and rode with it.
